Researched. We have not used this one long enough to give you a verdict, and we would rather say so than invent one. What follows is how it works, who it suits, and what it will not do. When we have used it properly, this page carries the verdict and the date.

We have now written about three shampoos that do three different jobs. A clarifying shampoo strips buildup, and is meant to be used occasionally. A ketoconazole shampoo goes after the yeast behind dandruff, on a schedule. This one is the everyday wash — for the days in between, and for a scalp that complains about ordinary shampoo.

Your scalp is skin

It is easy to think of shampoo as something for hair, but most of what it touches is scalp — skin, with the same barrier as the rest of you, and the same capacity to get dry, tight and irritated.

If your scalp itches or feels tight after washing, and it is not flaking the way dandruff does, a shampoo that is harsher than your scalp can tolerate is a reasonable first suspect.

What it leaves out

The listing says it is free from sulfates, MIT, dyes, parabens and fragrance, and allergy-tested for sensitive scalps.

Sulfates are the strong foaming cleansers in most shampoos. They clean very effectively and can take more oil than a dry or sensitive scalp can spare.

MIT — methylisothiazolinone — is a preservative that became one of the more common causes of contact allergy on the skin. Leaving it out is a meaningful choice for a product aimed at reactive skin.

Fragrance is the most frequent trigger of all for sensitive skin, on the scalp as anywhere else. Fragrance-free is not the same as unscented, and this says fragrance-free.

What it adds

Ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, according to the listing — the same barrier-supporting ingredients CeraVe builds its skincare around. The idea is to clean the scalp without disturbing its barrier, and to leave some moisture behind rather than only taking it away.

The listing also claims hair ten times smoother and five times more hydrated after one wash, and scalp hydration for up to 72 hours. Those figures come from the brand's own testing and are footnoted on the listing; they show the direction of the effect more than its size on your head.

What gentle gives up

Gentle cleansing is gentle on buildup too. The listing says it removes buildup, and for everyday residue that will be true. For weeks of heavy styling product, dry shampoo or silicone, a gentle shampoo may simply not be strong enough — that is what the occasional clarifying wash is for.

And sulfate-free shampoos often lather less. Less foam is not less clean, but it can take a second wash to feel that it has worked, especially on long or thick hair.

Who it suits

Anyone whose scalp is dry, tight, itchy or easily irritated; anyone with coloured hair looking for a milder everyday wash (the listing says it is suitable for coloured hair and all curl patterns); and anyone using a medicated or clarifying shampoo some days who needs something kind for the others.

What it will not do

It will not deal with dandruff, which is driven by yeast and needs an antifungal. It will not strip heavy buildup. And it will not settle a scalp that is reacting to something other than your shampoo — a hair dye, a styling product, or a skin condition that deserves a doctor's look if it persists.
