Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer and Styler

A blow-dry with a round brush takes two hands, a dryer, a brush and some practice. The One-Step Volumizer folds the dryer into the brush, which is why it became one of the best-known hair tools of the last decade.

How a hot air brush works

The barrel is an oval brush with vents. Hot air blows out through the bristles while they hold the hair under tension. Tension plus heat is what a blow-dry is; the tool simply gives you both in one hand.

The oval shape is the point. Rolled under at the ends, it gives a smooth, bent finish. Lifted at the roots, it gives volume. That is most of what people want from a salon blow-dry.

What it does well

Speed and ease. Volume at the root, smooth lengths and a soft bend at the ends, without learning to coordinate a dryer and a brush. For many people it is the first tool that makes a home blow-dry look like one.

The two habits that matter

Start with damp, not wet, hair. Rough-dry or towel-dry until your hair is mostly dry, then use the brush to finish. Holding a hot brush on soaking hair for long stretches is where most of the heat damage comes from.

Use a heat protectant, and the lowest setting that works. A brush that holds hair against heat for a while is hard on it, especially fine, bleached or curly hair. We explain what a protectant can and cannot do in what the temperature on a heat protectant actually means.

Finish each section with a few seconds on the cool setting if yours has one; it helps the shape set.

Who it suits

Medium to long hair that is straight or wavy, and anyone who wants volume and a smooth finish without a separate dryer and brush. On short hair the barrel is hard to use well.

What it will not do

It will not give tight curls; it bends, it does not curl. It will not be as gentle as air-drying. And it will not replace a dryer for soaking-wet, very thick hair, which takes a long time with a brush alone.
