Mehron Paradise AQ Face Paint Palette
Halloween makeup is one of the fastest-rising searches in beauty this week, along with the name of the company that has supplied stage and film makeup since 1927: Mehron. Paradise AQ is its water-activated face paint, and it is a very different thing from the greasy tubes in the costume aisle.
Water-activated versus cream paint
Cream or grease face paint is pre-mixed and stays soft on the skin, which is why it smudges, transfers onto everything and can feel heavy. Water-activated paint is a dry cake: you wet a brush or sponge, pick up colour, and paint. It dries to a matte, smudge-resistant finish that feels lighter, and it comes off with soap and water. It is what professional face painters mostly use.
According to the listing, Paradise is made in the USA and is vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free and gluten-free.
What is in the palette
This is the Basic palette, a set of core colours to mix and layer. The listing's description covers the wider Paradise range, including neon and blacklight-reactive versions; if you want glow-under-UV colours, check that the palette you choose is one of those.
How to apply it
Start with clean, moisturizer-free skin, so the paint has something to grip. Dampen a brush or sponge — damp, not dripping. Too much water makes paint streaky and slow to dry; too little makes it drag. Build colour in thin layers, letting each dry for a moment, rather than one thick coat that will crack. Use a sponge for large areas and a fine brush for lines.
For extra hold through a long night, a light mist of setting spray over the top helps; we explained how those work in setting spray and setting powder solve different problems.
The patch test, this week
Paint a small patch on your inner arm or jaw and leave it on for a day. Do it now, not at 6pm on the 31st. Any face paint — even a professional one — can cause a reaction in someone, and the time to find out is before you have painted your whole face. Keep paint away from the inside rim of the eyes, and do not paint over broken or irritated skin.
Taking it off
Soap and water, gently, with a soft cloth — no scrubbing. A little oil cleanser first helps lift deep colours. Then moisturize; your skin has been under paint all night.
What it will not do
It will not survive heavy sweating or rain the way a waterproof product would — that is the trade-off for coming off easily. It will not look good painted thickly in one go. And it will not suit anyone who skips the patch test and reacts.
The product
