A barrier moisturizer in Amazon's top ten: what ceramides and niacinamide do together, and the SPF question

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer
Most of Amazon's top beauty sellers this week are trend products. This one is the opposite. It is not exciting, and that is the point: it is a fragrance-free, barrier-supporting cream that suits almost everyone, which is what most people actually need.
What is in it
According to the listing: La Roche-Posay's prebiotic thermal water, ceramide-3, niacinamide and glycerin, for up to 48 hours of hydration and to restore the skin's natural protective barrier. It is described as fragrance-free, paraben-free, oil-free and alcohol-free, and dermatologist-tested for all skin types, including sensitive.
Why ceramides and niacinamide work together
Ceramides are part of the fats that hold the skin's outer layer together and keep water in. Putting them back helps a dry or irritated barrier recover; we covered the barrier in a ceramide cream for a barrier that has had enough.
Niacinamide supports that barrier too, and is one of the best-tolerated ingredients there is, with a reputation for helping with redness and uneven tone; see niacinamide: what the percentage means.
Glycerin draws water into the skin. Together, they make a moisturizer that hydrates, repairs and asks very little of sensitive skin.
The SPF question
Toleriane Double Repair comes in more than one version, including a "UV" version with broad-spectrum sun protection, and this listing describes the UV version in places. Before you buy, check which one you are adding to your basket.
If you want it to be your sunscreen, choose the UV version and check the box says "Broad Spectrum". Then use enough — around a quarter of a teaspoon for face and neck — which is more than most people use of a moisturizer. If you already wear a separate sunscreen, the plain version is the one to get. We explain why the amount matters in what SPF measures.
Who it suits
Almost anyone who wants one dependable moisturizer: sensitive, dry, combination and normal skin, skin recovering from too many active ingredients, and anyone pairing it with a retinoid. Very dry skin may want a richer cream on top in winter.
How to use it
Morning and night, after cleansing and any serums. It pairs naturally with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser for a routine with as little in it to react to as possible.
What it will not do
It will not do what a retinoid or a vitamin C serum does. It will not protect from the sun unless you buy the UV version and use enough. And it will not feel rich enough for everyone on the driest winter days.
