Retinol in a toner pad: what a pro-retinol does at pad strength, and the rules that come with any retinoid

A pre-soaked pad with a retinol relative, collagen and centella. What pro-retinol usually means, why pad strength is gentle, and why it still belongs at night and away from your other retinoids.

Researched. We have not used this one long enough to give you a verdict, and we would rather say so than invent one. What follows is how it works, who it suits, and what it will not do. When we have used it properly, this page carries the verdict and the date.

MAREE Collagen Retinol Toner Pads

Retinoids are usually sold as serums and creams. These put a retinol relative into a pre-soaked toner pad, alongside collagen and centella. It is a gentle way in to the ingredient family — and it still comes with the rules that apply to every retinoid.

What "pro-retinol" usually means

The listing describes the pads as collagen and pro-retinol toner pads. "Pro-retinol" is a loose term, and it usually means a precursor that the skin converts, in extra steps, into retinol and then into the form that actually does the work. Every extra step loses some along the way, so pro-retinols are gentler and weaker than retinol itself.

That is not a criticism. For skin that has never used a retinoid, or reacted badly to one, gentle is the right place to start. We explain the family in retinoids: why frequency beats strength.

What else is on the pad

Collagen, for hydration on the surface — it cannot join the collagen in your skin, as we explained in collagen in a moisturizer. Centella asiatica, for calming, which the listing says gives the pads a slight scent. And antioxidants, according to the listing. The combination is built to be soothing and hydrating, with the retinol relative doing the slow work.

How to use them

At night. Retinoids break down in sunlight and make skin more sensitive to it, so evenings are the right time. After cleansing, sweep a pad across the face, or — as the listing suggests — lay pads on areas that need them for a few minutes as a mask.

Start with every other night for the first couple of weeks. Increase only if your skin stays calm.

The rules that come with any retinoid

One retinoid at a time. If you already use a retinol serum or cream — or a vitamin C and retinol pair — do not add these on the same nights. Stacking retinoids is how irritation happens.

Sunscreen every morning. See what SPF measures.

Pregnancy. If you are pregnant, trying to be, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using any retinoid product.

What pads cost you

Pre-soaked pads are convenient, and you pay for the pad and the jar as well as the liquid. We weighed that up in toner pads vs a bottle and a cotton round. For a nightly step you might otherwise skip, convenience can be worth it.

What it will not do

It will not do what a full-strength retinol does, and certainly not what a prescription retinoid does. It will not show results in a week — a retinoid is judged over months. And it will not clear deep or persistent breakouts, which are a job for proven actives or a doctor.

The product

Pre-soaked toner pads with a gentle retinol relative, collagen and centella, usable as a nightly toner or a short mask. A soft first step into retinoids, for skin that wants to start slowly.
