Researched. We have not used this one long enough to give you a verdict, and we would rather say so than invent one. What follows is how it works, who it suits, and what it will not do. When we have used it properly, this page carries the verdict and the date.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Cream

The skin around the eye is thinner and has fewer oil glands than the rest of the face. It dries first and shows it first, as fine, crepey lines that come and go with moisture.

What Hydro Boost means

Hydro Boost is Neutrogena's hyaluronic acid range. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it draws water and holds it in the top layer of skin. Lines caused by dryness look softer while the skin is well hydrated. This version is fragrance free, which matters near the eyes, where fragrance is a common cause of irritation.

What it does

Day to day, it keeps the under-eye area hydrated and smooth, and gives concealer a better surface. That is a modest promise, and a realistic one.

Do you need an eye cream at all

Not always. If your face moisturizer is gentle and fragrance free and does not sting your eyes, it can usually go around the eyes too. An eye cream earns its place when your face products are too strong for the eye area (retinoids or acids, for example), or when the skin there is drier than the rest of your face. We go into this in a squalane eye cream: when an eye cream earns its place.

How to use it

A small amount, about a grain of rice for both eyes. Tap it along the bone under the eye with your ring finger rather than rubbing. Morning and night, under sunscreen in the day. Keep it off the lash line.

Who it suits

Dry or dehydrated under-eyes, sensitive eyes that react to fragrance, and anyone who wants a smooth base for concealer.

What it will not do

It will not change dark circles caused by pigment or shadow. It will not firm loose skin. And it will not replace sunscreen around the eyes, which does more over the years than any eye cream.
