Eye serums: what the skin there actually needs, and what firming means
The skin around your eye is thinner and moves more than any other. That sets what a serum can plausibly change.

Paula's Choice Pro-Collagen Peptide Firming Eye Serum, 0.5 Fl Oz
The skin around the eye is the thinnest on the body, has very few oil glands, and sits over muscle that moves every time you blink, squint or smile. It is the first place to show fatigue and the first place to line, and neither is a failure of your skincare.
That anatomy is what decides which claims about it are plausible.
Three different problems wear the same word
"Eye bags" covers at least three separate things, and only one of them is a skincare question.
Fluid. Puffiness that is worse on waking and better by mid-morning is interstitial fluid, and it responds to position, salt, sleep and a cold compress. It is not a serum problem, and it is the one that responds fastest to things that cost nothing.
Pigment. Darkness that is brown and stays put through the day is pigment, and it behaves like pigment anywhere else — slow, sun-sensitive, measured in months.
Shadow. Darkness that is bluish, or that changes with the light, is structure: fat pad, hollow, and the vessels showing through skin that is thin enough to be nearly translucent. No topical moves it, and any product promising to is selling you the wrong thing.
Working out which you have is most of the value in this category, and it costs nothing.
What peptides can be expected to do
Signal. Certain peptide sequences have reasonable evidence for nudging the skin's own repair and matrix behaviour over sustained use — weeks to months, not days.
"Firming" is the honest word for that effect, and it is honest precisely because it is vague: a modest change in how the skin sits and reflects light. It is not a lift, and a product that says lift is describing an optical trick or nothing at all.
Moisture does more of the visible work than anyone admits
A well-hydrated eye area looks smoother, and fine lines that are partly dehydration lines soften within days.
That is a real result and it is worth having. It is also achievable with a plain moisturizer, which is why an eye serum has to be judged on whether it does anything the rest of your routine does not.
Whether you need a separate product at all
Sometimes. Eye formulas are usually lighter, less fragranced and less likely to migrate into the eye, which matters if your regular serum stings there.
But if your face cream is gentle and you can take it to the orbital bone without irritation, the separate step is optional. The area is not chemically different enough to require its own shelf; it is just thinner and less forgiving.
The timescale, so you can hold it to one
Hydration in a week. Any peptide effect at eight to twelve weeks, alongside daily sunscreen, or not at all — because the sun is doing more damage to that skin than anything a serum can undo.
Judge it at twelve weeks against a photograph, not against a memory.
