Pimple patches: what they can and cannot do overnight

Evidence tier: researched. We have not run these long enough for a verdict. What follows is what hydrocolloid does, and the mismatch that causes most of the disappointment. When we have tested them properly — including against a supermarket own-brand on the other cheek — this page will say so and date it.
A hydrocolloid patch is a wound dressing borrowed from medicine. The material absorbs fluid, keeps the area moist, and — this is the part nobody markets — puts a physical barrier between the spot and your fingers.
What it does well
An open or weeping spot. That is the case hydrocolloid was designed for. You will usually find the patch cloudy in the morning, and that cloud is the fluid it drew.
Stopping you picking. Not a small thing, and arguably the main thing. Most of the marks people are still looking at three months later did not come from the original spot. They came from picking at it.
What it will not do
A deep, closed, painful bump. There is nothing at the surface for the patch to draw, so it has nothing to work with. This is the most common disappointment with patches, and it is a mismatch of tool to job rather than a bad product. The patch is not failing; it is being asked to do something it was never built for.
Anything preventive. A patch is a response, not a routine step. Wearing one where nothing is happening achieves nothing except the cost of the patch.
On the cheaper ones
Hydrocolloid is not exotic. Plenty of own-brand patches use the same material, and it has been dressing wounds for decades.
Where the branded ones tend to differ is adhesion and thinness — whether it is still on at 6am, and whether it disappears under makeup. Whether that gap is worth the price difference is a real question and not an obvious one. We will answer it the only way it can be answered: the same night, one of each, one on each cheek.
