Every pass takes a little of the jumper with it

Stop and look every few strokes, and stop altogether once the surface looks even. It does not need to be perfect.

What it will not do

It will not stop pilling from coming back. The loose fibre that formed the first pills is still working its way out of the fabric, and more will form. It will not change a fabric that pills because of what it is made from. And it will not rescue a patch that has already worn thin — if anything, it will make that thinness easier to see.
