Lip tints: why a stain outlasts gloss, why it clings to dry patches, and the one step that fixes that

A lip tint stains the lips rather than coating them, which is why the colour lasts after the shine has gone. How stains work, why they show every flake, and how to wear one well.

Researched. We have not used this one long enough to give you a verdict, and we would rather say so than invent one. What follows is how it works, who it suits, and what it will not do. When we have used it properly, this page carries the verdict and the date.

Lip tints are one of the most searched-for lip products this week, and this drugstore one is climbing fastest of all. The appeal is summed up in the listing's own line: gloss fades, tint stays.

Coat versus stain

Lipstick and gloss sit on top of the lips. They give strong colour or shine, and they come off on cups, food and everything else. A tint works differently: its colour sinks into the surface of the lips and stains it, so that once the glossy or watery part has worn off, the colour is still there. That is why tints survive coffee and lunch in a way most lipsticks do not.

The flaky-lip problem

Because a stain colours the surface it lands on, it grabs hardest on dry, flaky patches, which soak up more colour and turn darker than the smooth parts. On dry lips, a tint can look patchy for that reason alone.

The fix is to smooth the lips first. A night-time lip treatment helps — we looked at a peptide lip butter and a PDRN lip serum with gentle acids — and so does a thin layer of balm, blotted off, a few minutes before applying the tint.

What this one offers

The listing describes a lightweight, hydrating tint that keeps lips comfortable and gives a fresh wash of colour that lasts all day. Hydrating matters with stains, since many traditional lip stains are drying. It is vegan and cruelty-free, and made without parabens and microplastic particles, according to the listing.

It comes in several shades. This link goes to a rosy pink; choose the shade that suits you on the listing.

How to wear it

Apply to the centre of the lips and blend outwards with a fingertip for a soft, just-bitten look, or build it up for more colour. Let it set for a minute before pressing your lips together. Add balm or gloss on top if you want shine — the colour stays underneath when the shine wears off.

Taking it off

Stains are designed to last, so they do not always come off with water. An oil-based cleanser or a little balm left on for a minute and wiped away usually lifts what remains.

What it will not do

It will not give the full, opaque colour of a lipstick. It will not look even on very dry, flaky lips without some preparation. And it will not come off in a quick splash.

The product

A hydrating, budget lip tint in several shades, from a drugstore brand. Sold by essence's own store when we checked.

The one people are searching for is the essence Hydra Kiss Lip Tint.
