LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask

Every autumn, lip products climb the beauty charts, and LANEIGE's Lip Sleeping Mask is one of Amazon's top beauty sellers this week. It is a thick, leave-on lip treatment you wear overnight.

Why lips dry out first

The skin on your lips is different from the skin on your face. It has no oil glands, a much thinner protective outer layer, and it is exposed to air, food, hot drinks and licking all day. So when the air turns cold and dry, lips lose water faster than anything else and are the first place you notice it. Licking them makes it worse: saliva evaporates quickly and takes more moisture with it.

Why overnight

During the day, lip balm is constantly worn away by eating, drinking and talking. At night, a thick layer can sit undisturbed for hours. That is the idea of a sleeping mask: a rich, cushiony layer that seals moisture in while you sleep, so you wake up with soft lips instead of starting the day dry.

What is in it

According to the listing: a Berry Mix Complex, rich in antioxidants; coconut oil, shea butter and murumuru seed butter to nourish and seal in moisture; and vitamin C, to help protect from external aggressors. The butters and oils do the main work here, forming the protective layer. The listing says it suits normal, dry, combination and oily skin.

How to use it

Last thing at night, after brushing your teeth. If your pot comes with a little spatula, use it rather than a finger to keep the pot clean. Apply a generous layer, more than you would a balm. In the morning, wipe away anything left and follow with a daytime balm. Many people also use a thin layer during the day.

How it compares

We have covered three other lip products. eos's lip butter is a daytime butter in a tube you can carry in a pocket. Dr.Reju's PDRN lip serum is a lighter treatment. And essence's Hydra Kiss tint adds colour with some moisture. The LANEIGE mask is the heaviest of the four, and the one built for overnight.

Who it suits

Anyone whose lips get dry, flaky or tight in cold weather, anyone who wakes up with dry lips, and anyone who wants their lip colour to go on smoothly in the morning. It also makes an easy gift.

What it will not do

It will not help much if you keep licking your lips through the day. Lips that crack at the corners, stay sore, or peel for weeks should be seen by a doctor, as that can be something other than dryness. And it is not a sunscreen: the listing mentions no SPF, and lips burn too, so use a lip balm with SPF outdoors.
